P7 Shared Education Workshop with Almac

30th Apr 2026

Today, our P7 pupils were delighted to take part in a Shared Education STEM workshop led by Caroline and Stephen from Almac. The interactive session provided pupils with an engaging insight into science and medicine.

Stephen introduced Almac as a global pharmaceutical company and explained its mission to improve health. Pupils learned how medicines are developed, from clinical laboratories through to the manufacturing process, and discovered the wide range of career opportunities available in science. They also explored the work of key individuals in history whose discoveries continue to shape the modern world.

Working collaboratively with pupils from St Columba’s, the children took on an engineering challenge to design and build a bridge using a variety of materials. They tested their designs to ensure a ball could travel along and underneath the bridge while also considering cost efficiency. To finish the day, pupils stepped into the role of analytical chemists, using chromatography to separate colour pigments in marker pens.

The pupils learned a great deal and thoroughly enjoyed the practical activities and the opportunity to work alongside their friends from St Columba’s.
