Fair Faa Ye!

18th Jun 2026

On Monday P5,6 and 7 joined members of Kilrea Ulster-Scots Society on a trip to the Ulster-Scots Agency in Belfast. When we arrived we were greeted by Shirley who had a variety of games and activities to teach us about Ulster-Scots history and language.
First we had a scavenger hunt around the exhibition to find facts about the plantation and notable Ulster-Scots who had made major contributions to society. To tie in with the USA 250 celebrations this included Ulstermen who had printed the Declaration of Independence and helped design the Great Seal of the USA.
Then we learned about some of the history of this area and how migration over the last 400 years has moulded our language. It turns out we understand a lot of Ulster-Scots words and we use some of them every day. We finished off with The Gruffalo in Scots which was very funny.
On the way home we got a final treat with lunch at McDonalds.  After our Happy meals and McFlurrys we were pretty happy ourselves.  Many thanks to Kilrea Ulster-Scots society for organising the trip and to Causeway Coast and Glens Council for sponsoring it.  We plan to explore our Ulster-Scots heritage further next year and we look forward to meeting up with members of the local society again.
